Subaru, Down East Magazine

Subaru. Maine. Those were the two words I had to run with for this assignment, and it was a great one to work on for Down East Magazine. I always love when I get a call for assignments like this, where there is room for me to explore the story a bit on my own and track down information. I spent a few days driving around the state on this Subaru Safari. True, they are everywhere, but it’s not as easy as one might think to track down the ones that fit the vision for the story. I roamed a great salvage yard filled with Subarus, saw an old Subaru that was actually two cars combined to make one, ran into some Brats and photographed a moving car while roped into the back of my pickup (thanks for the great driving and knot tying, Brent)! Fun, fun story to shoot. Here’s how it came out in print, and a few others from the shoot.

The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Alumni Magazine

I was contacted not too long ago by The Wharton School’s alumni publication for a shoot with Peter White, an alum who has done work throughout the world to help countries and communities create sustainable methods for growing food. Peter, who was actually in Maine for a vacation, had a suit overnighted up from his home for the shoot and was great to work with as we put together a concept that incorporated both technology and organic farming. A big thanks to my friends at College of the Atlantic for allowing us to use their great Beech Hill Farm on Mount Dessert Island as a location for the shoot and Brent, assistant extraordinaire. The cover story was a great piece if you want to check it out here.

Cancer Fighters Thrive Magazine

I was recently asked to photograph a mother and daughter for Cancer Fighters Thrive, which just put out a really nice piece on the incredible relationship and bond between Mistie and Kim. I had a wonderful time hanging out with Mistie and Kim for this shoot in Maine, and it was a pleasure to meet both of them, hear some great stories and really get a true sense of the bond they have with one another. Thanks for the laughs, and I wish you both all the best!

Shaw & Tenney, Down East Magazine

This one started out as just a quick mention of a place in Orono that made great paddles and oars by hand. After looking into it more I discovered that Shaw & Tenney not only makes their products by hand (and does it really, really well), but they also ship to clients around the world. Many of the recipients are famous musicians, actors, etc. One recent shipment was sent out as a gift for Paul McCartney.

They also make the paddles for Vegas gondolas at the Venetian in Las Vegas, and their masts and other products have appeared in major movies over the years. After speaking with co-owner Steve Holt, I was able to set up a shot for my Maine Mugs project, but also suggested the story to Down East. It was a lot of fun to meet everyone at Shaw & Tenney and watch them at work. Big thanks to all involved–here are a few of my favorites from the shoot as well as the Down East clip.

Suzanne Spruce for Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems

Suzanne Spruce, Director, EMHS Community Relations is just great to work with and always fun to photograph.

I have been working with Eastern Maine Medical Center and Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems for the last couple years now, and have always had a great time getting to know all the talented and important people who make up this diverse hospital system, as well as the patients I’ve had the opportunity to meet.

Maine Mugs: Scott Peterson

Scott. D. Peterson, Ph.D. Writer. Husband. Father. Editor. Educator. Coach. Local Historian. Unwavering passion for Sport and literature, teaching connections between baseball and American culture. Clock-winder for 10 years. Published Baseball stories and articles in journals and online. Once—and hopefully future—ball player. Traveled around 3/4 of America’s perimeter with future—and present—wife. Continues to raise his family in Orono. Rang the church bell at midnight on a frosty October night with a crimson moon in 2004 when the Red Sox brought home the world championship. Published the book Images of America: Orono. Of course he caught the ball . . . .

Working on a new project for the year, called Maine Mugs: Orono. I’m basing the project on one simple question: “Do you know anyone interesting in Orono?”

One of the big perks of working as a photographer is getting to meet new and interesting people all the time. I work all over the state of Maine and beyond, but wanted to focus on a project locally. Met some great people so far, and looking forward to meeting more.

CSO Magazine Cover Shoot

Shot the cover of this month’s issue of CSO magazine with Scott Blake, currently with Bangor Savings Bank. We decided to go with the idea of an outdoor portrait, conveying the idea of strength and stability to complement the security and risk industry. Big thanks to Scott for being such a great subject to work with on the shoot.

Janet Sawyer

It was a pleasure to meet Janet Sawyer, business development director of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council while on assignment for a business magazine here in Maine. She is working to help revitalize the mill in Dover-Foxcroft and help bring broadband Internet access to the community.

We photographed Janet at the abandoned mill, and despite the rain and nasty weather we were working against that day, had a good time–always nice when you can find a small overhang to work under during days like this one!

Nicole Snow, Darn Good Yarn

It’s not every day you get an editorial assignment that allows you to play with a seemingly infinite amount of yarn–in just about any color or texture you can imagine. We carefully arranged all the yarn and I hung off a 12-foot ladder (thank you Brent for keeping that ladder from falling) for this frame.

I was assigned to photograph Nicole Snow, owner of Darn Good Yarn for a business publication here in Maine, and we had a great time putting this together. Big shout to Nicole for being such a great subject!
